Warehouse Control System Leader Qc Software Talks to Right Order Picking

According to Rich Hite, founder of QC Software, “There isn't a “best” order picking system for a specific distribution scenario…using multiple approaches is increasingly the smart choice. Order picking strategies must take into account many different variables such as, storage and retrieval mode, picking method, order release method, picking communication (RF, voice, PTL, etc). With that premise companies need something to tie all of these methods and technologies together, and that is a WCS.”

Cliff Holste, SCDigest’s Material Handling Systems Editor, recently argued that order picking strategies must consider these different variables:

* 5 Unit of measure (pallet, cases, eaches, etc.)

* 5 Storage mode to be used (floor stacking, selective rack, pallet flow, carton flow, etc.)

* 5 Potential use of automation (pick-to-belt, carousels, ASRS, etc.)

* 5 Order release method (discrete order release, waves, etc.)

* 5 Picking method (discrete order pick, cluster picking, batch picking, etc.); this is usually directly connected to the order release method

* 5 Order picking communication and validation approach/technology (RF, pick by label, voice, RFID, etc.)

The WCS solutions provided by QC Software enables companies to streamline their warehouse operations with the lowest total cost of ownership in the industry ensuring increased corporate profitability. Traditionally, a Warehouse Control System (WCS) executes instructions provided by an upper level host system, such as an ERP system or a WMS system. QC Enterprise, on the other hand, is a true Tier 1 WCS which provides advanced management capabilities including inventory control, resource scheduling and order management.

QC Enterprise is comprised of 4 tightly integrated modules which provide state of the art warehousing capabilities and the QC Toolkit to easily configure QC Enterprise and its modules to fit any warehouse environment.

QC Software (www.qcsoftware.com) is the leading provider of Tier 1 warehouse control systems to the warehousing and distribution industries. Since 1996, QC Software, utilizing state of the art technology combined with extensive research, development, and rigorous testing, has developed the QC Enterprise suite of products. Designed to be modular in nature, easily configurable, and platform independent, this highly scalable solution satisfies the needs of any size warehouse.
